Lincoln marketing graduate reflects on his professional development

When Lincoln alumnus Ryan Murphy, BA (Hons) Marketing, 2014, came to the University of Lincoln, he gained with the skills, experience and confidence he needed to successfully launch his career.

“I have wanted to study marketing for many years. I love business and how products are sold and that's what encouraged me to study this area,” says Ryan.

Ryan was keen point out how his marketing course not only expanded his understanding of the subject area, but also helped to develop him as a professional, something that has been of huge value at this early stage of his career.

“The course helped me develop knowledge of marketing but also how to work in a professional manner. The lecturers are very helpful and their dedication and time invested in myself and other students is what has helped me get to where I am today.”

Ryan now works as an Early Careers Assistant at Sainsbury’s head office in London where he assists graduates and students applying for placements and graduate schemes.

Ryan feels that his course here at Lincoln has given him a range of skills which have enabled him to succeed in his current role.

“Doing many presentations to fellow students and lecturers enabled me to speak confidently to my colleagues who may be at higher levels and present myself in a professional manner. Studying different areas of marketing and units like advertising has helped me with my career.”

Working in early careers, Ryan is also happy to share advice with students who are soon to be entering the job market themselves.

“Do not rush an application. Every application should be tailored to the role you are applying for. I would also say sell yourself and get as much additional experience as you can.

“When I was at university there were many events that were great for building my experiences with networking and that also look great because you are going above and beyond your university course.”

Aside from his course, Ryan’s lasting memories of Lincoln will always be of graduation, an event that rounded off a fantastic learning experience.

“Lincoln is a beautiful city and graduating in the Cathedral is a real honour. I loved studying marketing and I feel the lecturers are a great asset to the university, I loved it all."
