Alumna makes mark in medical research

For Naomi Paul, BSc (Hons) Forensic Science, 2015, The University of Lincoln was always her first and only choice. After three years of hard work, dedication and the will to succeed, Naomi’s journey through the University has led to the start of an exciting career as an analytical chemist at 3M Health Care.

“I work in a team doing research and development of formulations for asthma medications. The work I am doing is something I didn't think I'd be able to get into without doing a master’s degree first, so it's a great experience,” said Naomi.

“On a day to day basis I use various techniques to analyse
the drug formulations. I am also involved in method development and optimisation of methods to make analysis of the drugs more effective.”

Naomi’s transition from education into work was a swift one, with a recruiter realising Naomi’s potential during a course research project.

“I got put forward for the job and was offered an interview after a recruiter saw my poster at the poster conference we had to do as part of our final year research project. Without doing that research I wouldn't have got this job.”

Naomi's course here at Lincoln included conventional lectures, practical classes and field visits, all of which gave Naomi the skills and knowledge required to make the jump straight into employment.

“The experience I learnt in the practical sessions we had as part of our course was something that also helped me, as I had a lot of hands-on experience to offer.”

When asked to pick a particular highlight of her course, it was this opportunity to gain practical experience that really stood out.

"The most enjoyable part was gaining so much hands-on experience with all the different analytical instrumentation and being able to get a feel for what it is that you enjoy most.”

Despite joining the University’s alumni family this September, Naomi’s time at the University of Lincoln may not quite have come to an end; she is considering making a return in the near future.

“I am still thinking about returning to the University within the next year or so to do a master’s by research in analytical chemistry, which was what I had planned to do before I got the offer to go to an interview for the job I now have.”

Naomi has fond memories of her time here at the University, with this September’s graduation ceremony a particular personal highlight.

“Graduating in the cathedral was an amazing experience and something I'll never forget. The atmosphere was amazing and all the alumni and academics were so positive about the University and the experience they'd had there.”
