Manchester plays host to second major alumni event

The University held an alumni reception in Manchester as part of an ongoing series of national alumni events. The gathering, which took place in Salford’s MediaCityUK on Thursday 19th November, follows the success of a similar evening held in London earlier this year.

Alumni were joined by Jenny Baxter, Chief Operating Officer of BBC England, who delivered a speech offering her guidance and advice to those seeking to develop their careers within the media. Jenny is the former controller of BBC News Production and now has responsibility for activities across BBC North, Birmingham and Bristol.

The event is the second major alumni reception of the year, following the hugely successful London event held at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in July. The evenings are a fantastic opportunity for alumni to reconnect with friends, meet fellow graduates and to keep in touch with the alumni team.

The aim of the receptions is to build and maintain relationships while sharing the continuing developments being made by the University of Lincoln. This month’s event was just one in a series of similar events being planned across the country.

Jack Shelbourn, who graduated from the University’s School of Film and Media in 2010, with a degree in Media Production, said; “Manchester was a great experience. It was lovely to meet somewhere new, and the venue was fantastic. It was great to meet so many alumni who were working in the surrounding buildings in many different roles in TV broadcast, and lovely to hear how they are all doing.”

Alongside a strong turnout of alumni, the event was hosted by the University’s alumni team and was also attended by a number of academic members of staff.

Emma Seamer, Head of Alumni & Development, said: “We were delighted to reconnect with graduates from across a variety of disciplines at our second UK alumni event. MediaCityUK was a fantastic venue due to the fact a large number of our Film and Media and English and Journalism alumni go on to forge hugely successful careers within the BBC and other major broadcasting corporations - from working for Blue Peter to Songs of Praise.

“We were particularly delighted to welcome Jenny Baxter, BBC England Chief Operating Officer, who came along to deliver a fascinating talk about her career and offer advice to alumni as to how to make the most of opportunities within the industry. We are now looking ahead to holding similar events in Nottingham and in Lincoln in early 2016. We have a large alumni network and will keep people up to date with our future events and activities.”

Thank you to everyone who came along to our alumni reception at MediaCityUK. It was great to catch up with the progress...
