Love In Lincoln

An alumni couple from the University have got engaged during a secret proposal on campus. Dan Lake asked girlfriend Emma Churchill to marry him after organising a special video of memories to be shown in the University’s EMMTEC Lecture Theatre - with a bit of help from the alumni team!

Dan and Emma met here at the University of Lincoln while both studying Psychology and Criminology, and the pair now live together in Warwickshire.

Dan, who graduated in 2008, has just secured a role as an Educational Psychologist for Warwickshire County Council. Emma, who graduated in 2009, works as a Spa Therapist.

Dan knew that it was time to take the next step in their relationship, and after already organising to return to Lincoln for the annual Christmas Market weekend, he decided that it would be a great chance to ask the big question.

“I’d wanted to do something a bit more memorable when the time came, and I’d always known that we would both want a personal and meaningful location. In that sense, Lincoln was the natural place to come to – we see it as a second home with many happy memories from our time at University," said Dan.

Dan created a montage of pictures and memories with a soundtrack of ‘their’ song, McFly’s ‘Love Is Easy’, to be shown to Emma before asking her the question.

Dan knew what he wanted to achieve, and with support from the alumni team, a plan was formed for his big moment. After exploring several options, The University was able to organise to have Dan’s video shown in the EMMTEC Lecture Theatre - the stage was set!

After a great Sunday morning in the city, Dan managed to persuade Emma to take a trip to campus, where his surprise was ready and waiting - and fortunately everything went to plan!

“It couldn’t have gone better, not least of all because I got the answer I was hoping for! I’m also delighted that I managed to keep it a complete surprise, Emma had no idea why we were heading into the University, or that the question was coming.”

With an immense sense of relief and emotion, it was time to celebrate. For Dan and Emma, it was the perfect way to start the Christmas break.

“We initially went for a few cocktails to settle the nerves! In the coming weeks, we’ll be spending time with family and friends over the Christmas break. We’ve been overwhelmed by all the kind messages, phone calls, cards and presents people have sent to us.”

Many congratulations to Dan and Emma! Remember to keep in touch and let us know when you've set a date!
