From McQueen to Topman, fashion designer lines up more awards

Sam Cotton graduated from the University of Lincoln with a degree in Illustration in 2008, before moving to London to break into the fashion industry.

Now he is one half of acclaimed fashion label Agi & Sam, which has been announced as the UK Nominee for the International Woolmark Prize.

Sam met Agi Mdumulla while interning at Alexander McQueen in 2008, where they gained valuable experience of working within an international fashion house. It was then that the duo decided to launch their own label.

Agi studied Fashion Design at University and so with Sam’s illustration prowess, the pair felt that their skills could complement each other in a very unique way.

They produced their debut collection just two years after Sam graduated from Lincoln. The look-book for their first collection went viral and earned them a great deal of support, including sponsorship from Fashion East after it was picked up by Lulu Kennedy.

The contemporary menswear designers have been making big waves ever since, designing collections for Topman, and winning the British Fashion Award 2013 Emerging Menswear Designer Award.

The successful duo are now one of five European nominees for the menswear International Woolmark Prize 2014-2015. Agi & Sam will first attend the European regional award ceremony, in Paris, in July, during its Haute Couture week, for the chance to win AUD$50,000 (£28,000) and to design a collection for the global finale.

The finale will take place at London Collections: Men in January 2015, with the winners receiving a further AUD$100,000 to assist with fabric sourcing and marketing of their collection. The international winners will also have their collection commercialised through key worldwide retail partners including Harvey Nichols, Saks 5th Avenue and My Theresa online.

Agi and Sam have developed an important relationship with Sir Paul Smith, who is now a mentor to the pair, and with a growing following of influential fans and patrons, it is easy to see why they are going from strength to strength.
