Lincoln graduate joins top flight football club Sunderland AFC

University of Lincoln graduate Adam Housley, BSc (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching, 2013, has spent the last few years working his way up the football league to secure an exciting role as a Technical Scout for top Premier Football Club Sunderland AFC.

While studying for his degree, Adam managed to secure a work placement as an Assistant Analyst for Scunthorpe United evaluating key statistics to give feedback to the players.

When Adam graduated he started a role at Rotherham United as the First Team Performance Analyst where he spent two seasons with the club.

“A personal highlight for me was Rotherham’s promotion to the Championship,” said Adam.

“A dramatic penalty shootout followed an enthralling game in the League One play-off final which saw Rotherham secure their place in the Championship League. It was a really special moment.”

In November 2015, Adam joined Sunderland AFC as a Technical Scout where he spends his time finding undervalued talent that can give the football club the edge on the playing field.  There has been a huge shift in the way he works from following a unit of 11 players at Rotherham to now just focusing on looking at one player at a time.

Adam returned to the University last month to deliver a keynote speech to current students and sixth-formers as part of the Careers in Sport LIVE event. He shared his experiences and provided essential advice for working in the sports industry. He told students that any type of experience is useful in this field, urging them to find new ways of working whether it be getting involved in coaching local teams or covering a sporting event for the local newspaper.

Adam warned about the unsociable working hours in football with demanding weekend and evening schedules and the setbacks they may experience along the way in this very competitive industry. However, he urged them to persevere with their dreams as a career in sports is really worth getting excited about.
