Forensics graduate secures dream job in the Police

For Lincoln graduate Tanya Caren, BSc (Hons) Forensic Science, 2011, coming to the University of Lincoln gave her the essential skills she needed to pursue a career in a rewarding yet complex field of Forensics. Five years on, Tanya is now doing the job she always wanted, working as a Scenes of Crime Officer (SOCO) for Warwickshire Police.

Tanya told us: “Choosing to study Forensic Science at the University of Lincoln was the perfect balance; the course had a brilliant practical aspect to compliment the theory. These skills and experiences are what landed me my first graduate role”.

After graduating from the University of Lincoln, Tanya secured a graduate position with a Forensic Science Provider called Key Forensic. It was here she developed her skills and gained vital experience in different Forensic roles to progress her career. She told us: “It was essential that I spent time working for a forensic science provider gaining valuable experience. I almost certainly wouldn’t have got the SOCO job without the experiences I gained from the different roles I undertook at Key Forensic”

Now in the job that she always wanted to do since graduating, Tanya told us, “Working as a Scenes of Crime Officer is the job I always wanted which could not have been achieved without the skills and experiences I gained at the University of Lincoln and at Key Forensic”.

Reflecting on her time as a student, Tanya told us: “Lincoln is a fabulous place and still has a very big place in my heart. It has the perfect balance of good University facilities and plenty of things to do in and around the city which means you can have a balanced life as a student.

“Make the most of each day you are a student. My times studying were some of the hardest but equally some of the best times of my life. I miss Lincoln and the University to this day as it has helped shape the rest of my life”.
