Mum quits the rat race for new life in the country

Leaving behind the London rat race for a life in the country might sound like a step down in pace for most – but not for young mum Louise Wright.

Since leaving the capital and a successful career in the events industry to return to her Lincolnshire roots in 2013, Louise has combined working on the family farm where she grew up with studying for a university degree and raising her young family. In the gaps in between the dawn starts, assignment deadlines and dirty nappies, she also launched a new business with her husband.

Louise explained the decision to move back to Lincolnshire was motivated by her life-long passion for agriculture.

Working part-time on the family farm with her father and sister, Louise enrolled on an agriculture course at the University of Lincoln to advance her knowledge of the industry. Meanwhile her husband Alex drew on his professional experience at Facebook to set up a new enterprise specialising in social media marketing, based in the University’s Sparkhouse business incubation centre.

Contributing to the new business, working on the farm and already a mum to one-year-old Millie, Louise became pregnant during the first year of her degree studies, giving birth to Freddie just a few weeks before enrolling on her second year.

Louise (now 33) graduated from the University of Lincoln this September (2016) and was invited to give the student oration in the graduation ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral on behalf of the University’s College of Science.

Reflecting on how she balanced her studies alongside her work and family commitments, she explains: “It was definitely the most challenging three years of my life. Having two small children, working and finding the time to study was really difficult and I really couldn’t have done it without the help I had.

“Staff and lecturers at the University were really understanding, especially when I had Freddie. Giving me the space to be a mum and offering me flexibility when I needed it meant that I could continue my education and complete my work to the standard I needed to.

“Throughout the whole of the three years I’ve had the incredible support of my husband and family and I really can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done.

Having successfully completed her degree, Louise is still heavily involved in the running of the family farm, while taking a lead role alongside her husband as Operations Director at their social media marketing agency, Knapton Wright Ltd. Freddie is now at nursery whilst his big sister, Millie, has just started primary school.
