Book deal with top publisher is picture perfect for illustrator Mark

An illustrator who developed his craft at the University of Lincoln has signed a deal to draw up a new series of exciting children’s books for top publishing house Bloomsbury.

Illustration graduate Mark Chambers (30) will work on a range of 24 fiction and non-fiction titles aimed at encouraging a sense of wonder about animals and nature in young readers. It follows a deal between Bloomsbury, publisher of the Harry Potter books, and the Zoological Society of London, owners of London Zoo. 

Mark, who is currently based at a studio in Lincoln and has worked with many other prominent publishing houses including Random House, Templar, Simon and Schuster and Scholastic, said: “The opportunity to work with Bloomsbury is fantastic for me. I have wanted to do some work for them for a while. It’s great to know my picture books will stand alongside the likes of Harry Potter and books by the former children’s laureate Michael Rosen.”

The new children’s book series, which will be produced over a two-year period, was inspired by Mark’s earlier collaboration with London Zoo to create ‘Animal Adventure’, an interactive children’s area at the heart of the zoo.

Zoological Society Director, David Field said: “At ZSL we have so many interesting and inspiring stories to tell. We have loved sharing these stories with our visitors in the zoo and this new exciting partnership with Bloomsbury will let us reach young children around the world, sharing the amazing, strange and fun sides of our work whilst hopefully creating a generation of budding conservationist.”

Mark’s love of drawing began when he was just four years old, when he would scribble on scraps of paper.

He graduated from the University of Lincoln’s BA(Hons) Illustration programme in 2003 and was selected to exhibit his work at the D&AD New Blood Awards, the design and advertising community’s awards for those trying to break into the industry. He then set up his studio at home, working from a double bedroom. Soon after that, he was signed up to be represented by the Bright Group International, where he has been ever since.

Mark believes the industry requires a lot of hard work and dedication to be successful.

He said: “To do well in this industry you need to make a good, strong portfolio that is in keeping with current trends, make sure you know your market, research your publisher and keep at it.”
